The Georgia Satellite ... or ... You've got Sputnik, I love Sputnik

(image from Celestia Motherlode)

OK, so it was actually launched from Kazakhstan, not Georgia, but 50 years ago today Sgt. Pepper taught ... oops, sorry, wrong post ... where was I ... oh yeah, 50 years ago today Sputnik was launched and began orbiting the Earth as the first man-made object ever to do so.

It was an enormous accomplishment that changed the world. It set in motion as many objects and events that are now as inherent in our daily lives as the printing press or the axle.

Happy 50th Birthday Sputnik! You may have lived fast and died young, but you blazed a trail across the heavens and will never be forgotten.
